IBM's new Next-Generation 65nm Cell

The New Cell will power up the Road Runner system, intended to become the most powerful supercomputer

Today, IBM Corp. has announced a new generation of Cell processor, especially for the IT servers. The PowerXCell 8i serves petaflops performance, and it is testing in the Road Runner system for the first super-state. IBM will change its server and the barrier petaflops have hundreds of users to install on two sockets board with the new chip cell, able to afford "superinformatique for the masses."

The 65-nanometer process technology was used to the new chip to reduce the consumption of energy, with the same 3.2 GHz frequency is characterized by the 90nm chip. IBM is now in a position, two chips on a single edge and do not have a power consumption of less than 250 W as required by its BladeCenter server. The new cell in 32 GB of RAM (compared to 2 GB for the Cell) and DDR2 memory. This contributes to the support of large amounts of data sets from many high-quality technical applications.

By Jim Comfort, vice president of effort optimized for IBM Systems and Technology Group, the chip is now capable of holding up to 190 Tflops double-precision floating point performance, a level that is 5 times higher than the previous because of the Over at the eight specialities Cell kernel.

IBM also has its BladeCenter easily support systems for servers, which both energy or x86 processors based on cells and the cards by the development of tools for programming and management of software. "For example, you can use our API for sending Monte Carlo functions in the cell" without prejudice to existing or power x86 code, said comfort.

The QS22 adapter card will be launched by the end of the month and will have a $9,995 price tag. IBM intends to have the cards on seven core markets in real-time analytics and digital media. "We think the total available market is quite large approaching $8-10 billion", said Comfort. Segments from finance, medical and seismic applications are included in the analytical markets. "There is a real value proposition here", said Comfort. The cards are also intended to trans-coding or aggregating content in digital media. "Everyone wants to get as much H.264 content down for high definition media downs their fixed pipes as possible", he said.

IBM has big plans for the future with Cell. The company will die with the versions 16 and 32 vectors for the treatment of carrots, all in multiples of eight. The chips are support for the same code today for the eight chips vector basis, a basis for IBM's Power-Controller.

The list could be either a multi-chip architecture with two cubes connected silicon, or a monolithic structure. The future could bring Sony the use of 65-nm versions of the cell in which two processors in one of the next generation PlayStation. After comfort, video games consoles to be managed by IBM platforms for the first versions of the high-end chips in large quantities and, later, to prepare them for the high-end IT systems with low volume.

Two versions of a single Cell chip cards have already been rolled by IBM for its servers, but the company successfully to sell only small quantities of them so far one of the reasons why, according to comfort, is the fact that the cards are not improved, to meet the needs of IT professionals.

But more than 50 customers of IBM are currently working with the servers of power from the cells of chips. Also more than 20 partners from IBM developed tools and software for cell therapy.

Approximately 16000 of the new cell chips are probably from Los Alamos National Labs in the power of Road Runner system should break the fence petaflop performance. The system is two times more energy than the most powerful system in the current ranking of the Top 500 list. That would be IBM Blue Gene / L, installed at Lawrence Berkeley Lab.

Road Runner ", the new, faster computers in the world," said Comfort. "Most other petaflops efforts aim to come online next year."
