New mSATA port to enable SATA on smaller devices

Written by IT News on 11:19 PM

Serial ATA, or SATA for short, has become one of the industry's most widely used connection interface, to provide consumers with a standardized interface for storage solutions. Have reached its third generation, the interface is expected to provide consumers with enhanced data rate to 6Gbps, twice that of the previous generation. So, Serial ATA International Organization (SATA-IO) announced today that the development of specifications for a new mini-SATA (mSATA) interface connector. The solution is expected to SATA connection that allows a wider range
more portable devices, thanks to reduced physical specifications.

"If consumers are more dependent on mobile devices, it is good that the efficiency and speed of SATA technology to this growing product segment very useful," said Knut Grimsrud, SATA-IO President and Intel fellow and director of storage architecture. "Solid-state hard drives offer a rugged, lightweight and low-resolution energy storage on these devices, and mSATA is one of the few interfaces that can provide an important link for these small compact form factor SSD. "

Expected to be showcased at the upcoming Intel Developer Forum (IDF) September 22 to 24 in San Francisco, California, the new mSATA connector is expected to provide support for 1.5Gb / s and 3.0Gb / s transfer rates. The adoption of the new mSATA contact is popular SATA interface is expected to be available to a wider range of portable and ultra-portable computer, including laptops and netbooks. The connector will also manufacturers to develop smaller form factor SSD with an estimated size of a business card, thanks to its small size.

Companies like Dell, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba and STEC, members of the SATA-IO cable and connector block behind the development of new mSATA connectivity interfaces.
