And... it's here! What seems to be the first Trojan targeting your bank account information is finally here! TROJ_BANKER.MQH comes with a medium damage potential, which underlines the Trojan's capability to reach its goals, in our case – stealing the bank account info. According to security vendor Trend Micro, the
Trojan affects most Windows versions including 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP and Server 2003, so most people out there might be vulnerable if they got an unpatched system or no security product has been installed.
The Trojan may be deployed quite easily, because it's enough to visit a malicious webpage infected with it to compromise your system. However, TROJ_BANKER.MQH may also be dropped by another malware already installed on your computer, but keep in mind that it "requires other components in order to run properly", Trend Micro explained.
And now, the most important aspect of the Trojan: "it steals bank account information by monitoring the infected system's browser", the security vendor explained. "Once a banking site is opened in a browser, this Trojan launches a fake logon page to trick the user to enter bank credentials."
That's right, just like any other phishing scam based on fake pages aiming to trick you into disclosing the bank account credentials. Sure, those phishing attacks can be easily spotted by analyzing the URL link displayed into your browser address bar, but the latest techniques used by phishers prove us that this is no longer a way to remain secure.
So, in case you want to remain on the safe side, and we all want that, don't forget to update your antivirus to the latest version and apply the newest virus definitions rolled out by the security vendor. In addition, you should avoid visiting malicious pages that could attempt to deploy the Trojan on the system.
