AMD to Delay the RS780 Chipset Because of Driver Issues

Regardless of the fact that AMD has finished working on the hardware for its upcoming generation of RS780 integrated-graphics chipsets, the company can not release it because of a software obstacle. More to the point, the platform still lacks the drivers to support the new Hybrid CorssFireX technology, one of the most important features included in the RS780 chipsets.

Hybrid CrossfireX is one of the company's most important technological achievement in the video sector in a long time, and Advanced Micro Devices is planning to give it a proper welcome. Since the chip designer has had an extremely unpleasant experience with the partly-functional line of 45-nanometer CPUs (the Phenoms and Barcelonas), it won't take the chance of introducing the driver-less Hybrid CrossFireX.

Still, the company has decided to introduce the RS780-based motherboards on the Chinese market only. Selling the motherboards in certain regions first might be the best choice for the company, and the motherboard is slated to arrive in China on January 23. Miscellaneous sources at the motherboard manufacturers said that the launch date for the other countries is yet to be announced after the drive is complete and working.

However, a prolonged delay in worldwide shipments will seriously affect AMD's profits as well as momentum. It is not the first time when the chip manufacturer failed to release its new technology on time, and lost everything to competition. This was the case with the 45-nanometer processors that were delayed for mass availability in the second quarter of the year.

A complete set of Hybrid CrossFireX drivers is expected to be ready until mid-February. It will be distributed through AMD's channel partners. It is also supposed that the RS780-enabled motherboards will be worldwide available before the end of February, if there are no further technological issues with the chipset. AMD refused to comment upon these statements, given the company's policy of treating unofficial information.
