A recently published study entitled "Airport uncertainty: the case of Lost Laptops, Dell conducted by the Ponemon Institute and brought to light the fact that about 12000 laptops are lost in airports on a weekly basis, in America alone. The survey collected information from 106 major airports in the United States. Of all those missing laptops around 70% are recovered, while the remaining 30% are never found.

It is necessary to mentioning that the actual figure is believed much higher because many incidents are never reported. It is of equal importance to mention that contain portable computers of users private data and confidential business information.

The simple truth of the matter is that only a few companies ever disclosure of information concerning the theft of a laptop. One of the main reasons this happens is because employees do not report the theft of a laptop. They are simply too otrupvam to admit that they managed to "misplace" on the laptop the company gave them. The survey showed that only 1% of 800 business travelers included in the study, admitted the loss of the laptop.

Larry Ponemon, founder and chairman of the Ponemon, had this to comment: "It's staggering to learn that by 600000 laptops are lost annually in U.S. airports, many of which contain sensitive information that companies must represent. IT departments must re-evaluate the measures as they are for the protection of mobile professionals, they carry on laptops, and company data stored on mobile devices. "

To protect the information stored on the laptop, but only if it is lost, Dell launched ProSupport mobility services. If the computer receives lost, whether stolen or simply stored somewhere so well that nobody can remember where, Dell provides software company data remains secure.

Why so many laptops get Lost? The survey has interviewed 800 passengers and it appears that they are either too much baggage with them and they forget about laptop, or they are in such influx on board aircraft that they leave behind a laptop. In Dell Ponemon survey shows that the most likely to lose seats and laptop are checkpoints on board the gate. In the worst thing is that about 65% of all business travellers do not use any security solution (such as encryption) to protect the data on the laptop and 45% do not even back it up so as not get accidentally deleted.
